Untitled NYC 1974 (Wall St series) by Charles Gatewood
A 40-year retrospective of Charles Gatewood's photography
Described as 'the anthropology of the forbidden' Gatewood's work has been compared to Diane Arbus and Robert Mapplethorpe but never previously shown in the UK.
This is Gatewood’s first visit to London since 1973. On his last visit, he met and collaborated with the infamous William S. Burroughs, who wrote the text for his book Sidetripping. Gatewood's mission was becoming clear at the time: to catalogue and record the darker sides of western culture.
This exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the full breadth of Gatewood's work, including rare images from the Wall Street collection and the London visit with Burroughs and Brion Gysin. All the work exhibited is available for sale.
Alongside the exhibition performance company Switch are producing a series of events around the artist's work:
* Thurs 2nd Oct - private view with live interventions by Switch, Emma Leach & Natasha Vicars and Katie O'Brien
* Sat 4th Oct - interactive installation at legendary fetish / body art club Torture Garden
* Weds 8th Oct - Performances That Kill - an evening of performance art curated by Switch, with new work by Justin Allen, Mark Butcher, Ewelina Kolaczek and Rachel Parry.
Switch and À Rebours have also commissioned outstanding sound artist Joel Cahen to create sound art pieces in response to 3 of the Gatewood images. These works will be exhibited and sold alongside the photographs.
