Shaun McCracken new Paintings

Breathtakingly intense paintings in watercolor and tempera, Shaun McCracken’s recent paintings are reminiscent of everyday doodles on overdrive. Superhuman doodles infact. Absent minded marks making journeys, a subconscious outpouring in vivid abstract designs, constructivist and expressionistic compositions, reminiscent of Sol-Lewitt one moment, slipping in to Umberto Boccioni by way of Wyndham Lewis or Richard Smith the next.

By using watercolor, the various saturation levels achieved and diffusing qualities of the medium understate the lengthy time and consideration employed in the new works. The results are jewel like small format paintings with enormous ambition and striking intensity belied by their sheer size. The painterly effect is a kaleidoscopic journey of private mark makings which feels familiar and yet extraordinarily beyond anything experienced before. With the paintings in Tempera on board, the extraordinary length of time it takes to paint these small format works, is evident by their incredibly deep and textured surfaces, a process which is unnerving but simultaneously beautiful to encounter.
