“Echoes of the Sea”
Chronos (time), Hydor (water) and Mneme (memory) are integral components of Charles Borrell’s imagery. Borrell’s visual language and inspiration are derived from the essence of change and mood of the sea and its relationship with the sky. Focusing on the seductive time between twilight and the first light of dawn, Borrell explores the relationship between serenity, time and space, giving the viewer a glimpse into a world offering emotional solace.
His work has assumed a fundamental association with the most formative memories of his childhood.
“As a child I would sit for hours breathing in the essence of the azure sea….” (Borrell 2007)
The artist relays his emotions and experiences to canvas through a primitive and raw manner, exploring and experimenting with texture and media creating a contemporary and abstract representation of seascapes and endless horizons. Going beyond mere nostalgia but encouraging the viewer to share the sentiment and theme of the painting while allowing them to create their own level of intimacy with the image according to their emotions and memories.
Charles Borrell’s paintings do not only offer the viewer an exceptional breathing space, but also looking at the totality of his works, one can clearly observe a constant development. His latest creations are a testament to his continuous pushing of boundaries where the tool has become the art in itself. Borrell uses domestic sponges for his abstracted seascapes, which themselves bear the traces of his previous works, and instinctively he started to create incredible 2 dimensional constructs. The fact that they are commonplace items gives these amazing works an additional edge. These striking pieces reflect a unique and versatile artistic approach.
Charles Borrell’s work is highly evocative, strong yet subtle and is a compelling journey through his evolving artistic style.
