The Man Without A Past
Wed 15 Oct, 7.30pm Lecture Theatre: 3WN 2.1, University Campus
Academy Award nominee for Best Foreign Film 2003, The Man Without A Past seized a score of awards from film festivals around the world. It tells the story of a man en route to Helsinki in search of work when a mugging leaves him with amnesia. Left with nothing but his clothes, he must adjust to building his life anew. Played with deadpan panache by Markku Peltola, he encounters a whole set of quirky townspeople living on the fringes of society. With dignity, humour and genuine tenderness, Kaurismäki shows us that comedy speaks loudest when it tells the truth.
Introduced by Wendy Everett, Dept of European Studies & Modern Languages, University of Bath.
Dir Aki Kaurismaki, Finland 2003, 97 mins, subtitles
