About

‘The Doors are perfect paintings; a relief from the picture world I've created for myself.' Gary Hume Twenty years after Gary Hume emerged onto the British art scene with his Door Paintings, we present the first-ever survey of this rich body of work. Large-scale, monochrome canvases painted with gloss house paint and based on the institutional doors of hospitals, the Door Paintings are foundational works in Hume's oeuvre. Some fifty Door Paintings make up the series. The exhibition presents eighteen of the most important works, from the mute elegance of the early Magnolia Doors and the Dolphin Paintings of the late 80s and early 90s, to the stylized anthropomorphism and radiant colour of the imposing aluminium panels of recent years. Together, they offer the opportunity to consider Hume's artistic preoccupations from a broader and compelling perspective. A fully illustrated catalogue with essays by Thomas Lawson and the exhibition's curator Suzanne Cotter accompanies the exhibition.
