SPACE NOW!
SPACE, London, June 12th – July 24th
SPACE, London’s first and largest studio provider, celebrates 40 years of promoting the arts & enriching the cultural life of London with an exhibition curated by Caroline Douglas, Head of Arts Council Collection. SPACE NOW! presents a roll-call of British artists currently working in SPACE studios, including this year’s Turner Prize Winner Mark Wallinger, Rebecca Warren, Yinke Shonibare, Michael Raedecker, DJ Simpson and new talents such as Peter Peri, Saskia Olde Wolbers (Becks Futures winner), Mustafa Hulusi (Cypriot Pavilion, Venice Biennale), Claude Heath as well as many artists still to be discovered.
This rich and diverse group show represents the strength of London’s artistic & creative community. London and the Borough of Hackney owes its competitive edge and continued position in the international art world to this vitality. SPACE has played a key role in establishing this position and continues to underpin its success.
The 40th anniversary coincides with an extraordinary moment of regeneration in East London. This challenges SPACE’s core provision of affordable workspace. SPACE NOW! will launch a fund-raising campaign to support the future of studios in East London.
Founded in 1968 by artists Bridget Riley, Peter Sedgley and Peter Townsend, SPACE was created to meet the need of professional visual artists for affordable studios in London. This bold experiment started with the conversion of St. Katharine's Dock and is now seen as a pivotal point in contemporary British art and urban development. Situated in the heart of the Olympic Borough of Hackney, SPACE continues to support artists and the cultural richness of East London.
