Going far beyond the world of climbing florals, classical stripes and stylised geometrics, this exhibition focuses on contemporary wallpaper designers and fine artists using the medium as an expressive form. Digital production means new materials and processes. It has also created a renewed interest in the traditional placing greater value on hand made designs and small bespoke editions. Ranging from subversive scrolls to embroidered textured patterns, and cut paper creations, this exhibition is full of ideas, humour, and technical achievement with unusual work by outstanding contemporary artists and designers. Exhibition includes work by Lizzie Allen, Marthe Armitage, Timorous Beasties, Deborah Bowness, Sonia Boyce, Claire Coles, Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Jake & Dinos Chapman, CUSTHOM, Godfried Donkor, Linda Florence, Claire Florey-Hitchcox, Marianne Keating, Tracy Kendall, Andrzej Krauze, John Kindness, David Mabb, George Malyckyj, Matthew Meadows, Carinna Parraman, Belynda Sharples, Jocelyn Warner, Hugh Dunford Wood, Brigitte Zieger and many more.
The exhibition sets the work of contemporary fine artists alongside the work of contemporary decorative designers. Jake and Dinos Chapman's âInsult to Injury' wallpaper reworks Goya's âLos Caprichos' etchings to outrageous effect; there is wallpaper by Linda Florence whose printing techniques and environments incorporate a mixture of traditional and new technologies; and work by Tracy Kendall, whose ideas have so often lead trends and developments within the wallpaper industry. Young emerging artist Claire Florey-Hitchcox focuses on the detail of intricate hand-carved woodblocks and the timeless quality of traditional print methods in creating hand-printed wallpaper. Embroidered wallpaper from CUSTHOM utilizes digital technologies, while Carinna Parraman's 3D stereo printing and lenticular patterns glow with an electroluminescent core.
