About

Will Tuck's paintings delve in to personal psyches, raid history
paintings and work with the knowledge and skills of a past age but
with the technology of the present.

In Will Tuck's first solo show at Carter&Gallagher, his new series
of work is loosely based around old master paintings and subjects
involving classical mythology.

The compositions become a tableaux sourced from cheap plastic toys,
accessories and disposable imagery from mass culture.

They are fantasy worlds mixing high and low culture and painted
wholly using an airbrush. By using the techniques and processes of
commercialism and focusing on classical subject matter and
compositions Tuck's paintings try to make sense of the past in the
present and our relationship with this past in a world which turns
faster and consumes quicker. Tuck's subject is: the world that churns
and his technical subversion gives rise to a deeper understanding and
appreciation of our continuously evolving history and our current
position in this story.

For these paintings are slick in their making and quick to the eye.
Given time though, they are deliciously knowing and reveal a
richness and depth which is compelling and rewarding to repeated
viewing.

Tuck ultimately toys with the idea of being a modern master in a world
given over to cheap thrills and fast consumption. He becomes the ring
master of the world he creates and surveys, as he manipulates, teases
and toyes with
his subjects, content and language of paint.

A former grafitti artist before going to art college, Tuck used to
ride the trains up and down the country where he developed his
technique of speedily executed tags and signatory styles in railway
sidings during long nights. In contrast, Tuck's large paintings are
meticulously painted and each painting often takes months of
painstaking and labored work to complete. Tuck completed an MA in
painting at The Royal Academy
Schools in 2005 and he is one of "The New London School" of artists
using highly developed skills engaging with the human condition.

Will Tuck is simply one of the most exciting emerging artists working
in Britain today.
