"The making of the work is a “drawing” process in the space. The pieces are not designed on paper but emerge out of working directly with the materials in the space. This immediacy is important to their becoming and therefore dictates to some extent the materials I use." - Frances Richardson talking about her January 2014 residency at Lubomirov-Easton.

LUBOMIROV-EASTON is a directed by artists Iavor Lubomirov and Bella Easton who produce a programme of exhibitions, residencies and off-site projects, designed to question the nature of both individual and collaborative art production and curation.

The directors’ primary interest in the space is as a site for individual artists to experiment and to develop new work. Artists are invited up to a year in advance to realise an ambitious project, either from an existing idea, or by exploring new directions in their practice. Through 2014 and 2015 use of the space will orient increasingly towards residencies culminating in one or two month exhibitions. Long-lead engagement and generous on-site time are seen as a way of working with artists to explore their own voice and vision, untrammelled by curatorial objective or group-show dialogue.

The gallery’s programme of solo projects is supplemented by a small number of two-person collaborations and group shows curated by Lubomirov and Easton or by invited outside curators. The directors use these projects as a way of exploring their interests in collaborative modes of making and curating art, while retaining the same approach to time-scales and engagement.

The gallery also has a growing collection of editions commissioned from the artists they work with. The collection specialises in unique multiples, often made by non-traditional edition methods and gathers together a richness of mediums, such as wood, glass, plastic, paint, paper moulds and cuts, metal, plaster and resin.

Alongside gallery-based projects, Lubomirov and Easton curate extensively off-site, as part of a larger conversation about artistic and curatorial processes, roles, collaborations and the various implications, complications and conflicts of interest that arise from combining these. Regular curated projects designed to openly discuss and assess their ideas includeCollateral DrawingThe Opinion MakersSublet, and the ALISN Conferences for Emerging Art Organisers, all of which recur and evolve across different locations and cultures within the UK and internationally and involve a growing selection of artists, curators and organisers.

The gallery offers volunteer internships. Contact info@lubomirov-easton.com to enquire.
