Is curly hair ugly, or not? Pelo Malo art exhibition will touch themes of beauty, racial and gender issues seen through the hair of women around the world. Pelo Malo will be a solo show featuring a new series of work by Puerto Rican artist Jennifer Kaplan-Ortiz, opening with a Private Viewing at the Anise Gallery on August 7th from 6-9PM, running until August 10th, 2014. ‘Pelo Malo' which means ‘Bad Hair' in Spanish, is a term used in Latin American countries to describe curly and Afro-Caribbean hair. This exhibit will discuss how women are perceived through their distinct hair types, and touch themes of beauty, along with racial and gender issues currently felt by women globally. Private viewing will include refreshments and Latin American food, followed by a talk with special guests at 7:30PM.
