About

The exhibition explores the theme of ELEMENTAL through three types of sculpture: 1. Sculptures that move or change appearance according to the elements of the sun, wind and rain. 2. Sculptures that explore the alchemic elements (earth, water, fire and air). 3. Sculptures that explore simple, elemental forms — e.g. Stonehenge or standing stones. Featuring a dynamic range of sculptures, highlights include ephemeral kinetic sculptures by Andrew Lee that shimmer and disappear on the wind, as well as Pete Rogers funky Lunicycle: a wind driven lunar sculpture that rotates centrifugally atop Burhgley's lake. Elemental sculptures include minimalist interpretations in steel by Mark Beattie, Sheila Vollmer and Julian Wild. These are complemented by more alchemic works by Nita Rao and Ian Campbell Briggs; as well as new commission by Stuart Ian Frost. His pyrotechnic drawing Iris, consists of two giant leaning oak trunks branded with the heraldic motif, the fleur-de-lis. The exhibition includes twenty-four exciting sculptures by sixteen artists with divergent approaches to the notion of Elemental sculpture.
