People, Place, Form - An exhibition by Jane Young, David Hall and Geoff Hewitt

About

This exhibition is an ecelctic collection of work from a trio of artists based in the North East. This is the first of a seris of major exhibitions for this informal collaborative. The exhibition will feature an exciting mixture of portraits, landscapes and sculpture, with each artist applying their own unique style. We have asked each artist to tell us a little bit about themselves: Geoff Hewitt I've been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember although other interests and necessities led me into a career in research science. Born in Stoke-on-Trent, I graduated in botany and later gained an MSc and PhD before moving into multi-national industry and academia. Art stayed with me throughout, with my first solo exhibition in Cambridge in 1980. After early retirement in the early 1990's my art practice quickly expanded to dominate my time. A large and busy family in Stoke probably shaped my interest towards people and figurative painting and the echoes of those early years sound in all my work. I enjoy painting the ordinary and every day, ideally from life although photographs can be important, often essential, part of the process. Recently my work has developed a freer style, particularly in the use of line, which I apply to both figurative work and my growing interest in landscape. I live in Willerby, Hull and am a member of the East Riding Artists. My work is widely exhibited and has gained awards and entry to many regional and national exhibitions. My part of the exhibition comprises work produced over the last ten years which, although painted independently and separated chronologically by unrelated work, demonstrates my periodic return to a strong theme of the unsaid or the unheard. Privileged knowledge. Skeletons. The root is, no doubt, personal but I leave observers to decode the paintings according to their own experience. David Hall Born in North Yorkshire, I graduated in Rural Estate Management at the Royal Agricultural College but became interested in Natural History and Painting which led to studying Scientific Illustration at Blackpool and Fylde College and two MSc qualifications in International Rural Development and Geographical Information Systems. I am a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. My initial illustration work featured in Images 11 the Best of British Illustration and I started out in advertising, publishing and scientific illustration, before twelve years in land management, County Durham, involved in Laurent-Perrier award-winning conservation schemes. I exhibit around the country and my paintings are collected worldwide, with the subject matter drawn from the rich diversity of the natural world. I work usually in acrylic paint (mainly Golden now), with some alkyd and some digital - using pro-create on the iPad. This exhibitions work is drawn from my daily walks with my dog Luna, along the River Greta, just above the "Meeting of the Waters" with the Tees. I recently returned to Teesdale, having grown to love the special character of the area during my previous working life there, and find a rich diversity of inspiration every time I set foot of the door. This body of work spans the seasons and things I've seen, getting better acquainted with the river. Jane Young I am intrigued by the way in which colour affects how I feel, the process of combining colour with traditional and non-traditional materials, and as a vehicle in itself is fundamental to my practice. Exploring the relationship between colour, light, space and form I work intuitively to create an outcome, using the opportunity to investigate further into the unforeseen. Inspired initially by the Bauhaus and the link between art and design art allows me to release emotion and capture visions. Design plays a significant role in my work allowing me to create work to fit the environment. I create work of varying scale that can be permanent or non-permanent but are site specific that will enhance the experience of public spaces. My recent work is concerned with research into the decorative arts. Using pattern and repetition as a starting point, I am investigating the qualities of materials such as Aluminium, wire, tape and Perspex, combined with colour. Working in a diverse range of media, be it sculpture, installation, printmaking or mixed media, I create 3D work initially. Using innovative methodology I reference the past to make contemporary art and the elements that intertwine characterise my practice.
