About

Chisenhale Gallery presents a solo exhibition by Edward Thomasson, commissioned as part of the Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency (2012-14). The Present Tense (2014), a new video co-comissioned by Chisenhale Gallery and Create London, weaves together tenuously linked situations that investigate how physical proximity and temporal distance might alter our readings of the situations and people we encounter. The video is structured around an extended musical number written with composer Soosan Lolovar, who Thomasson collaborated with on Between You And Me, a play presented by Chisenhale Gallery and Create London at The Glass House Community Centre in July 2013. Conceived by Thomasson as a complicit act of collective storytelling, The Present Tense is performed by a group of trained and untrained performers, many of whom have been working with the artist throughout his Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency. This new commission continues Thomasson's use of storytelling as a way to navigate the space between interior experience and exterior presentations of selfhood in the context of the human group. Edward Thomasson (born 1985, Stoke-on-Trent) lives and works in London. He works with video, performance and drawing. Recent presentations of his work include Passive Aggressive 2, Camden Arts Centre, London (2014), Left Behind Together, Outpost, Norwich (2013), both in collaboration with Lucy Beech, Coded Conduct, Pilar Corrias, London (2013), Just About Managing, Southard Reid, London (2012); Inside, South London Gallery, part of the Nina Stewart Artist Residency (2011-12). He was a participant of the Lux Associate Artists Programme (2012-13). The Chisenhale Gallery Create Residency is a major new initiative between Chisenhale Gallery and Create London. The partnership reflects the two organisations' mutual interests in commissioning artists to engage with east London's communities and its varied social and cultural contexts.
