Second Floor Studios & Arts (SFSA) — Open Studios May 2014

About

Where would you expect to find London's largest localised cluster of practising artists, craft makers and designers? You might be surprised to know it's on the south side of the Thames by the Thames Barrier between Charlton and Woolwich in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Open Studios — What is it? The bi-annual SFSA Open Studios are the highlight of the arts organisations calendar, a 3 day art, craft and design show. It's the perfect event for SFSA's membership and vibrant hub of over 400 artists, printmakers, craft makers and designers to showcase their individual practices, by opening their studio doors and exhibit their works of art, craft and design for the public to view and also buy directly from the artists and makers commission-free. It also allows for a great platform for networking and wider community engagement for all the family. A wide variety of work available across many disciplines and practises including: Architecture, Bookbinding, Cabinetmaking, Ceramics, Clockmaking, Digital, Drawing, Fashion & Accessories, Fine Art, Furniture Design, Garden Design, Glass, Illustration, Jewellery & Silversmithing, Moving Image, Photography, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles & Costume and Writing - there is certainly something of interest for everyone… May 2013 Open Studios attracted over 3,000 visitors, many regulars and lots of new faces from all parts, making it one of the largest single site Open Studios in the UK. May Opening Highlights… Anonymous - Secret ‘Score' Card - Charity Fundraiser SFSA's annual fundraiser in association with ArtPlatform. We've over 600 pieces of original work on A5 postcards from a variety of established and emerging artists. You'll be able to buy up to three pieces of art for just £20 each, with 80% of the proceeds going to charities and charitable aims… For more information visit: artplatform.co.uk/invite no format Gallery Modern Makers: Ceramics and Enamel In the second of a series of exhibitions celebrating the diversity of contemporary makers based at SFSA no format gallery will host a showcase of works in ceramics and enamel. Showing the work of six makers who share a common starting point in terms of materials, it demonstrates a range of approaches and breadth of practices to be found within contemporary ceramics and enamel. The exhibition will feature work by SFSA members' Emmanuelle Camus, Jane Cairns, Helen Carnac, Megan Cartwright, Merlin Wildman and Alex Zdankowicz. Thames Barrier Print Studio SFSA's spacious, professionally equipped open access print studio — available for experienced printmakers or anyone wanting to learn will be open throughout the Open Studios. Members of the public will be able to chat with studio technicians about facilitates, see work by members and watch print demonstrations in screenprint, etching and more. For Younger folk… Having wandered the studios younger visitors may be inspired to create. We have a dedicated family creative area in the Education Space.
