About

Balraj Khanna (b.1940) came to England in the early 1960's and is one of the foremost Indian artists, known not only for his painting but also as a curator and for his journalism and writing, best known for his award-winning novel ‘Nation of Fools'. Khanna's pictures express his unique pictorial language, iconic images that seem to float across the canvas. In 2001, he was commissioned to paint the safety curtain of the refurbished Hippodrome Theatre, Birmingham, the largest work of Public Art in a theatre. First shown at the gallery in 1993 Khanna's work has featured in our inventory ever since. Manisha Parekh (b.1964) is a highly respected Indian painter and sculptor, based in Delhi. During her career she has exhibited in India, Europe and USA and had a solo show at Osborne Samuel in 2006. Her work is often in series; although abstract the forms are organic and tactile with an evident sense of narrative. Parekh's use of material is a hallmark of her work. Her delicate yet complex structures are assembled from textured handmade papers, rope, cord and other natural elements. Avinash Chandra (1931-1991) was one of the group of young progressive Indian artists who trained in India but came to Britain to advance their careers. Chandra made his home in London and exhibited widely throughout his life, participating in many ground-breaking exhibitions such as the Hayward Gallery, London in 1989. Osborne Samuel represent the estate of Avinash Chandra and we have chosen a small group of very important and representative works, showing the transition from landscape painting to the more exuberant figure based pictures which characterise his later career.
