About

The Studios Gallery is proud to present a solo exhibition of works by figurative painter Andrew Parker. ‘Introspection' opens with a preview on Thursday 27th February, 6.30pm, all welcome. Stockport-born Parker has worked as a graphic designer since graduating from Stockport College but returned to his first love of fine art ten years ago and now bases himself in a studio in an old cotton mill in Stockport. Working primarily from life, Parker's practice is rooted in that oldest of traditions ‘the portrait', approaching each work as a search for the ‘personness' of his subject and always striving to create the absolute and unique life of the individual before him. The works evidence the search for the elusive presence of the shared experience between us as human beings. Exhibiting twice at the Royal Society of Portrait Painters annual exhibition, Parker was also shortlisted for the BP Portrait exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, with ‘The Painters Mother' in 2013. However, perhaps most exciting are his ongoing experiments into the search for the essence of what it is to be human in the body of the paint itself. In this exhibition a selection of these pared down experiments, that are as much about the materiality of the medium itself as the fundamental nature of the individual, are shown alongside ‘The Painters Mother' presenting two distinct ways of seeing and posing an essential question for any portrait of whether it simply records the outer visible surface of a person or provides insight into their character, some essence of being. But whether the subject is portrayed energetically with the minimum of marks or layered over multiple sittings, Parker's passion for life, light, form and paint are evident throughout his work. Andrew exhibits widely across the UK and was recently selected for the Ruth Borchard Self Portrait exhibition at Kings Place Gallery, London. He is an elected member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition runs until Friday 4th April, opening times Thursday 11am-7pm Friday 11am — 4pm or by appointment Tel: 07753842861 The Studios Gallery, 12 Union Road, New Mills, SK22 3ES Press enquiries — Lyn Bannister, info@thestudios.co Tel: +44 (0)7753842861
