They are challenged to respond creatively to a broad range of issues and communicate strong ideas with clarity and flair. We have a dynamic studio culture that encourages collaboration, critical reflection and the sharing of ideas. Our students explore the possibilities offered by both traditional and contemporary techniques, such as printmaking, photography, installation, animation and digital imaging. As the course progresses, they develop the skills to thrive in the rapidly evolving creative industries. 12 plus 1 is a work-in-progress show of self-directed work by third-year BA (Hons) Illustration students. Here we see students testing ideas, plotting narratives, sketching out worlds and devising campaigns. The show represents the broad scope of contemporary illustration. Ideas are communicated through mixed media, installation and moving image alongside more traditional forms such as comics, painting and drawing. Students apply their imaginations to themes such as time travel, futuristic worlds, mental health, utopia, power structures and social prejudice. The work is still evolving and will culminate in the final degree show, which opens on Thursday 12th June.
