About

Roman Signer Neue Skulpturen December 14, 2013 — February 15, 2014 Opening Friday 13 December, 6—9 pm Gallery hours, Tue—Sa, 11 am — 6 pm Galerie Barbara Weiss is pleased to announce its fourth solo show with Swiss artist Roman Signer (*1938 in Appenzell). A composition of six new sculptures is presented, which in its suddenness transfers this entire room installation into an arresting experience. Through the precise arrangement of a range of useful objects, Signer leaves open the different phases of his sculpture, thus inviting the viewer to freely (re)construct the possibilities of an event. It is another remarkable insight into the work of the artist, in which the use of materials, the testing and the final result are merged together into a ‘time sculpture'. The individual work arrangements that are installed filling the entire gallery space, invite the visitor to become part of such experience. A paragliding propeller on skis, Motor mit Propeller, 2013, which has been tested on an Appenzeller snowfield, is placed in the centre of the exhibition space. In close proximity, there is a construction made from a wooden table, a hosepipe and a champagne bottle, Pommery, 2013, that has the potential to explode. Further, there is Skis in aluminium gutters, 2013, a Bicycle wheel, 2013 and a Blue hosepipe, 2013, the latter is an encounter with a filled hosepipe attached to the ceiling and a timber beam. The sixth piece on show, Versuchsanlage, 2012, consists of a lawnmower-motor and a wooden platform. The imminent possibilities with all of these sculptures such as the fall of the timber beam on the hose pipe or the bursting of the champagne bottle — the movement, the sequence of action and reaction — create in the viewer a feeling of flux giving these imagined scenarios a sculptural form. Roman Signer has received international recognition through his actions, films, photography, sculptures and his artworks have been shown in numerous exhibitions (selection): Kunsthalle Hamburg (2009); Rochester Art Center, Minneapolis (2008); Hamburger Bahnhof — Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2007); The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh (2007); Kunstpreis Aachen, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen (2006); Camden Arts Centre, London (2001); Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht (2000); Secession, Vienna (1999); Kunstmuseum St. Gallen (1998); Skulptur. Projekte, Münster (1997); Venice Biennial (Swiss Pavilion) (1999); documenta 8, Kassel (1987). In summer 2014 a major retrospective will be exhibited at the Kunsthalle St. Gallen. Christina Green
