PRESS RELEASE SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL XXXI Who's Afraid of Red Yellow & Blue? FLOWERS ANNUAL EXHIBITION

About

LONDON. November, 2013. Flowers are delighted to announce that the annual Small is Beautiful exhibition, which has run for more than thirty years, will take place at their larger Kingsland Road gallery this year. Consequently it will be the gallery's most extensive yet, with over 170 artists submitting works, which opens on 3rd December, 2013 in perfect time for Christmas and runs until 4th January, 2014.
The works, which must be no bigger than a tiny 9 by 7 inches / 22 by 17cm in size, are the creations of many well-known artists, set alongside emerging artists and selected recent graduates. Established artists participating are, amongst others; Anthony Frost, Maggi Hambling, Nicola Hicks, Patrick Hughes, Nadav Kander, Tom Phillips and Bryan Kneale. Confined only by scale, with a theme to inspire them rather than dictate the final form of their submitted artworks, many of the artists involved find this both a liberating and challenging exhibition, creating pieces utterly separate from their normal practices.
Among the works included this year is Canadian artist Rosalina Hung's beautiful nostalgic painting from her series Of Myths and Men, To Death (Thanatos), Oil on wood panel, 6 x 8 in, 2013. Hung's delicately painted works incorporate familiar imagery to engage viewers with their own personal experiences and memories, evoking a common nostalgia.
London based artist Rob Nicol, experiments with the idea of taking on a different personae and each of his paintings, a self-portrait in some form; an element of his character embedded within a story where he can behave how he wishes. In his work Bucket Head, 2012, acrylic on Perspex, 10cm in diameter, Nicol leaves it to the viewers to ask whether we are afraid of Red Yellow and Blue rather than he, the artist.
Julie Cockburn has exquisitely hand embroidered a found photograph contradicting the generic and mass-produced, with something crafted, imbuing her intellectually and physically worn objects with value, drawing the viewer in to a sculpted journey of labour and creation. This piece echoes the theme of the exhibition with what could be a haunted house, seemingly draped with fluorescent thread.
In contrast to his large scale sculptures last year in Berkeley Square, Jeff Lowe's Making Space no.13, 2013, nickel plated steel 17.5 x 19 x 19 cm appears precious. The abstract space contained within, by an intricate web of nickel plated steel wire.
The exhibition will take place between 3rd December, 2013 - 4th January, 2014 at Flowers Gallery, Kingsland Road. For further exhibition information, go to: www.flowersgallery.com or Email: info@flowersgallery.com / Telephone: 020 7920 7777.
