JOHN PARFITT | GABRIEL PARFITT | An Exhibition of Paintings and Prints

About

This exhibition combines the work of father and son artists John and Gabriel Parfitt in their first joint exhibition together. The show will provide an insight into the processes and influences that go towards creating their work, highlighting both the similarities and differences between the artwork of father and son. Figurative imagery is integral to the work of both John and Gabriel. Parallels can be drawn from their application of materials, creative techniques and aesthetic ideals, with both sharing common textures and appearance of paint on canvas. John's figurative, semi-abstract images explore the human figure as a sign or symbol reduced to emotions and feelings in dynamic interaction. His work also shows the expressive nature of human motion and its relation to space, where the collision of edges creates sensuous outlines of energy. John's influences - artists such as R B Kitaj and Francis Bacon - are clear in his abstract figurative style, while Gabriel is clearly influenced by his father, having spent much of his time in his studio when growing up. Gabriel's latest work includes encased figures and must surely be inspired by having his Star Wars action figures mysteriously disappear as a child, only later to be found immortalised in wax in one of John's ‘found object' paintings. Gabriel's latest ‘Anonymous Composition' series uses silhouetted figures to punctuate exercises in composition that draw on his sculptural background, creating textured and abstract environments. The figures are anonymous to allow the viewer to place themselves in the abstract setting in order to generate an emphatic response to the painting. Between them, John and Gabriel have racked up more than 65 years of creative output with this joint-exhibition being the first of many more to come.
