BLACKBOARD: Patrick Staff will use the SPACE Blackboard and Courtyard as basis for part one of The Nudist In Two Parts, an investigation into the history of naturism through scripts, sets and amateur productions.

About

Taking the format of a fragmented and unfinished theatrical piece, the project aims to explore shifting social values of the body and its place in relation to civil disobedience, economic crisis, state legislation and forms of collectivity in a counter cultural context. Performed rehearsals will take place in Space's Courtyard on the 21st April and 12th May with an accompanying video hosted on the artist's website throughout. Patrick Staff is an artist based in London. His video, installation and performance pieces interrogate the political, physical and material implications of social spaces, historiography, and ideological frameworks of value. He uses abstracted physical movements and dialogue, performance, collective work and obscuring structures for research, production and the moving image to be made malleable. He frequently works collaboratively with a range of artists, theorists, historians and community groups. Recent exhibitions, screenings and performances have taken place at Milton Keynes Gallery, Showroom, Wysing Arts Centre, and FormContent and was a Lux Associate Artist 2010/11. This year he will undertake an active research project into social filmmaking, communication and government legislation on Fogo Island, Canada with Robin Simpson and present new commissions for Tate Modern and Monte Vista Projects, Los Angeles. He was the 2011/12 recipient of the SPACE/BloombergON studio award. The BLACKBOARD is a project involving artists who have a studio with SPACE. For each exhibition cycle a SPACE studio artist will be invited to make an intervention on a blackboard hung behind the front desk of the Triangle building. Previous contributors include Modern Activity, Vicky Wright, Banner Repeater, Peter Kennard and Stuart Elliot.
