That's Entertainment

That’s Entertainment is a group show that investigates the long tradition of seeking temporal amusements at the seaside. There is a peculiarly English sense of melancholic ennui associated with popularist entertainments and That’s Entertainment combines this with more prosaic notions of seeking out ones own more genteel amusements.

The show takes a wry look not only at the concept of escapist pleasure domes but also at more lo-fi, hobby-craft worlds of leisure activities which have in many cases overtaken the garish seaside entertainments of the early twentieth century. From am-drams in the town hall to rainy-day jigsaw puzzles and crafty seashell-covered boxes That’s Entertainment’s themes are underpinned by a not always comfortable sense of the growing gentrification of our seaside towns.

Whitstable’s recent history as a place that artists gravitate towards provides the perfect backdrop to the exhibition which will explore its themes in a number of intriguing and thought provoking ways.

Artists include Cathy Lomax, Keara Stewart, Alex Michon, Cathie Pilkington, Tamara Dubnyckyj and Rosemary Shirley.
