Edge of Ordinary II

About

edge of ordinary II (EOII) denotes both an exhibition and a collection of artists within an artists' collective. EOII is created and curated by Gail Olding and the forthcoming show hails its second manifestation. The philosopher Francis Fukuyama is known for his claim that history has come to an end. As such he is a post-historian — liberal democracy and market economy serving to replace the values foisted upon us by the grand narratives comprising history's obsolescence. Inspired by such thought the influential aesthetician and art critic, Arthur Danto (1924 — 2013), has written prolifically upon the end of art history. After the end of art history, he tells us, there are simply genres. There are no longer any ostracising conflicts between the artists of these genres. Artists who would once have been bitterly divided by overriding theoretical commitments have been released from these restrictions. EOII is a contemporary example of a co-operative exhibition of artists committed to making art in a pluralistic age. Discussing the work of EOII, the philosopher Derek Matravers http://www.open.ac.uk/people/dcm4 visits Espacio Gallery on Wednesday November 12th at 18:00 until 20:00 for a public discussion in the presence of the artists. Matravers' two most recent works are Fiction and Narrative (OUP, 2014) and a co-edited (with Damien Freeman) collection of essays entitled, Figuring Out Figurative Art: Contemporary Philosophers on Contemporary Paintings (Routledge, 2014). Professor Matravers will take up the themes of pre-modernity, modernity and post-historical art-making in the context of EOII, thereby plaiting philosophy, art theory and art criticism together. The work of EOII comprises; painting, printmaking, installation, sculpture, and film/video. The artists in EOII's present incarnation are: Brigitte Boldy, Dom Chastney, Charlie Dillon, Pamela Gerrie, Gail Olding, Gianluca Pisano, Jane Price, Bettina Stuurman, Konstantinos Vasileiou, and Edward Winters.
