About

Rod Barton, London is delighted to present Luc Fuller, Standing Clock Paintings, at this year's ABC Berlin. The constraints of time have become increasingly pervasive as the interconnection and mechanisation of society accelerates. Fuller brings this idea into fruition with his tongue-in-cheek portrayal of twelve clocks, their static, monochromatic hands and faces overlaid amongst tumultuous backgrounds. Despite their lack of common utility, his clocks evoke a sense of rhythm; perhaps not a rhythm as rigid as the traditional tick-tock of the second hand, but the conveyance of a more fluid, natural pace. This rhythm is one more in line with the natural tendencies and impulses of a jazz drummer repeating the sums of simple gestures such as booms, bats, pits and pats. As individual gestures, these exist only as noises, but when performed in sequence, rhythmic patterns are given life and structure. These clocks serve as a continuation of the ideas regarding symbol saturation recently seen in his presentation of the Wu-Tang paintings in London. Here however, Fuller expands from the more specific, generational understanding of the Wu-Tang W" logo, allowing himself a broader look at the dissemination of cultural ideas, particularly those regarding western concepts of time and the anxieties contained within.
