CANAL is delighted to present the first collaboration by Mollie Anna King and Patrick White. ‘I apologise for the crudity of this model' refers to a line from the film Back to the Future. The exhibition is a multi-media work, existing online, in print and as a physical installation in the gallery space. In the Back to the Future trilogy, the protagonist Marty McFly repeatedly uses photographs of himself and others to indicate the effect that his time travelling activities is having on their future or past lives. Characters begin to disappear, indicating that their future existence is threatened by present events. King and White's installation explores this conceit, using the interplay of analogue and digital technology — Polaroids, camera, tv and internet — to explore the nature of images and imaging technology, the virtual and the real, perception and time, and physical deterioration. A camera which is triggered by Back to the Future-related online searches will produce images of an actual Polaroid photograph of Marty McFly. These images will in turn be displayed on a 1980s television and on a website, which will be updated as a new image becomes available, although the images will slowly deteriorate as the Polaroid degrades under the effects of the camera's flash. The last element in the exhibition, a publication will be produced after the exhibition closes, and will contain images generated by the exhibition, which is conceived as a project with an online afterlife to be continued. Mollie Anna King (MFA Sculpture) and Patrick White (MFA Fine Art) graduated from the Slade School of Art in 2013. King's practice occupies a space between sculpture and performance.
