About

BALTIC presents Gail Pickering's new body of work drawn from the only remaining live recordings by the Vidéogazette, a 1970s community television channel based within a social housing complex in Villeneuve, France. This social experiment incorporated a key period of militant filmmaking, wherein a community produced an image of itself. For BALTIC, British artist Gail Pickering has devised a multi-screen, moving image installation where complex ideas of identity and memory are replayed and staged with a group of contemporary actors.Through this work, the artist addresses the subjectivity of the televisual image itself, testing the surface materiality as much as its content. Addressing this physicality of the projected image, the work is developed through its placement within an immersive installation, where narration and sound ricochet and reverberate within the gallery spaces. Pickering's practice incorporates time-based performance, spoken word, moving image and text, and is underpinned by careful research and appropriation of historical material. Near Real Time is her first major solo exhibition in the UK. A previous interpretation of this exhibition was presented at La Ferme du Buisson, France. BALTIC's exhibition is presented with support from FLAMIN London
