About

Window Space, a temporary gallery at The Cass, presents its second exhibition featuring the work of London-based artist Ana Genovés (b. Spain, 1969). Genovés' practice focuses on creating structures of significance that withhold meaning. A large object occupies the space, with a presence suggestive of a monolithic authority. The dark velvet concealing it has a religious or regal feel to it, is serious, intense and traditional. However, it looks slightly threadbare and functional, it is even reminiscent of a corrugated iron shack. Another object, a small wall next to it, conveys a similar utilitarian feeling. What are the implications of withholding in this context? Is it a question of power, to intensify the value of something or to diminish it? Who or what is exercising this power, and furthermore, who or what might be subordinated by it? These are some of the questions that Genovés' powerful objects posses in the viewer of the Window Space during the month of September. For the opening of her exhibition at Window Space, Ana Genovés has invited Sarah Jones to produce an audio piece that will be displayed at the Bank Gallery, also located at The Cass. A publication will be produced to mark the occasion of each exhibition and it will be available at the inauguration or via email at info.widowspace@gmail.com.
