About

Creative publishing platform Blurb and visual arts studio Jotta are pleased to present an exhibition of nine new creative commissions that investigate the future possibilities of the book as a printed object. These commissions will be launched as Unbinding the Book — a special project as part of the London Art Book Fair at the Whitechapel Gallery from 26 - 28th of September, before travelling to San Francisco and New York. From uses of thermal paper and light-reactive materials, to a re-imagining of TS Eliot's The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock and a book which is also a working radio, Unbinding the Book will bring together the work of practicing artists, recent graduates and a new generation of creatives, celebrating the art of books, book-making and illustrated story telling. From Futurism to Fluxus, books have always been crucial in the development of conceptual art, and continue to be a medium that is accessible to artists, designers and their audiences, offering new possibilities in creative expression. Pushing the boundaries of how books can be experienced, these nine pioneering artists not only demonstrate the way in which images evoke a narrative, but also bring to life the materiality, form and physicality that make books so alluring and different from their digital counterparts. Within this exhibition, artists will explore all elements of book production such as, interventions, pre and post printing, digital augmentation, and new methods of display while considering the sculptural qualities of print.
