Ninth Summer Fest of International Art: Ecuador meets Berlin

It is a great privilege to host the ninth annual Summer Fest of International Art in the EMERSON Gallery Berlin. Every year since 2006, EGB has invited artists from a single country to present a (highly subjective) overview of their culture for roughly one month in its showroom in Berlin. The Fest might include everything from visual arts and music, to poetry, theater and even culinary explorations. This year the featured country is Ecuador: Ecuador Meets Berlin. The ninth installment of the Summer Fest is curated by the New York-based artist, Cecile Chong, who will also be opening the event with her own solo exhibition with the title Souvenir. Chong works in a variety of media from textiles to encaustic work. Simple images, for instance of children and Far Eastern women in traditional garb, are evocative points of imaginative departure leading to a mysterious cul-de-sac which is all the more poignant in its defiance of definitive interpretation. In the context of the Summer Fest the viewer is invited to ask what is particularly Ecuadorian about the art on display, which, of course begs the question, what particular perspective the viewer brings to the work.
