About

Printmaking demonstration and gallery talk by contemporary Japanese woodcut printmaker Nana Shiomi. Nana Shiomi reflects on the cycle of life — the tidal sea and the balance of nature, and the stages of life reflected in architectural structures. Her contemporary woodcuts prints are influenced by Japanese culture. The images include traditional Japanese icons and planes of colour including deep reds, ochre and the ‘bokashi' blended colours reminiscence Japanese masters - Hokusai and Kunioshi. This combination of the Japanese method of woodcut printing from the Ukiyo-e period and new materials and tools create works with fine wood grain traces and black line drawing. They are immediately recognisable as the work of Nana Shiomi.
