About

Fugue ‘Fugue' n. 1. Music A polyphonic composition in which a theme or themes are stated successively in all of the voices of the contrapuntal structure. 2. Psychiatry A pathological amnesiac condition during which one is apparently conscious of their actions but has no recollection of them after returning to a normal state. This condition, usually resulting from severe mental stress, may persist for as long as several months. In McCartney's paintings unspecified figures are located in parallel worlds; animal bodies morph with figures or act as metaphors for the Self or a state of mind. Especially for ‘Fugue', McCartney will create, in situ, a three dimensional interpretation of Shakespeare's Caliban in the female form, combining her interests in the grotesque and alternate realities. In Bainbridge's drawings, ceramic figurines are fragmented and reconfigured to form new, abstracted versions of themselves. Along with the work of McCartney and Bainbridge, Fugue will present the work of a group of artists whose practices explore ideas relating to fugue narrative through differing mediums and approaches, from taxidermy to musical performances and architectural projections. Nicola McCartney studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, before completing a Masters degree in History of Art at Christ Church, University of Oxford. She is currently a PhD candidate at Birkbeck, University of London. Her book Death of the Artist is due for publication in 2015 with I.B. Tauris. www.nicolamccartney.co.uk Adam Bainbridge studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, before completing a Masters degree in Painting at the Royal College of Art.
