Steingrimur Eyfjord: KELLINGIN - Altes Weib

Steingrimur Eyfjord (b. 1954, Iceland) exhibits recent works which he begun to make in his studio in Dale in Sunnfjord, Norway, where he resided with his family in 2010-2012. As an Icelandic resident in Norway, his identity as such became a red thread through his most recent works; an ensemble of various works titled KELLINGIN - Das alte Weib. Manifested in drawings, sculptures and instructional works, revealing his processing and somewhat criticism of Icelandic and Norwegian society and culture, he presents a scrap-book diary spanning the time from when he moved to Norway until now, a part of his vast, ongoing collection of browse-through texts and images, based on his processing of newspaper material, dreams and recollections.

Eyfjord's art may appear equally diverse conceptually: founded on influences as disparate as folk tales, Icelandic sagas, women's fashion magazines, religion, superstition, critical theory and other current issues. He has for quite some time been occupied with analyzing cultural identity and national images and re-examining of cultural, historical, political, and economic aspects of society. His analysis is made through Nordic folk tales and myths, which he parallels with tabloid narratives and contemporary signifiers.

Steingrimur Eyfjord was Iceland's representative at the Venice Biennale of Art in 2009. He has twice been nominated for the prestigious Nordic Carnegie Art Prize. His works have previously been exhibited in all major museums and exhibition spaces in Iceland, as well as in the Nordic countries, Belgium, Canada, England, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and USA.
