Hedley Roberts: THE LOVERS
Herrick Gallery is proud to present an exhibition of Hedley Roberts’ new and recent paintings, featuring pairings of portraits that propose notions of desire, ritual and the potentially macabre with unsettling masked/unmasked visages. Sometimes painting in the dark, the artist immerses himself in a process of material concealing and revealing until the work reaches a position of otherness.
Hedley’s art practice meditates on themes of ‘love lost and lamented’. The pathos in his expressive figurative paintings considers our searching for completeness, our desires for connectedness, our longing to fit, blend, merge with or wed another. His work is influenced by Roland Barthes’ A Lover’s Discourse, psychoanalytical theory, the work of Merleau-Ponty, Hollywood love films and narratives of popular music. He looks for satiation in moments of passion, only to find adolescent anxiety, emotional crisis and broken heartedness.
Hedley Roberts work has been presented nationally and internationally including at the International Symposium of Electronic Arts Japan, Superdeluxe Gallery Tokyo Japan, Artoll Germany, Annexe Gallery Malaysia, Nanyang Academy of Fine Art Singapore, Susak Biennual Croatia, APT London and Vyner Street Gallery London. His work is in several private collections in the UK, Europe and South East Asia.
After graduating from Central Saint Martins in 1996, Hedley went on to study MA Printmaking at the Royal College of Art. In 2012 he completed his Doctorate in Fine Art at the University of East London with his Doctoral “Love and Other Stories; Kissing, Inbetweenness, and Mutual Give and Take”. Dr Hedley Roberts is Head of Art & Design at the University of East London and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Hedley was born in Germany in 1972, grew up in Cornwall and lives and works on London.
