Tania Hipkin - Walk On

About

Tania Hipkin is engaged in an exploration of the beauty she sees in human nature, and her work reflects this. She captures and preserves moments that may have otherwise gone unnoticed. Largely consisting of portraiture, recently her work has been focused on photographing the learning disabled community. She is drawn to the honesty and complexity of the characters she finds there. The upcoming show at Gallery 40 will present a selection of intimate portraits of a group of learning disabled indiviuals at work in a stable. The pictures depict a raw, and sometimes exaggerated emotion that is both charming and fascinating. . It is a celebration of the progress that has been made since the days of the asylums. In contrast, the basement of the gallery will present a selection of images taken in derelict asylums. These pictures give an insight into what it may have been like to live in such a place, whilst also depicting the magnificent beauty of Victorian architecture. The exhibition is being held during National Learning Disabilities Week and aims to help raise awareness and provoke discussion. Tania Hipkin studied fine art at Kingston University. She lives and works in Brighton
