Cole explores ideas of the grotesque and the uncanny through delicate pencil drawings. She says, “My work has a dark undertone, making ambiguous suggestions, which have the potential to unsettle and disturb. My drawings animate the inanimate treating the object as if it had a sensibility, making the banal perverted and sinister in an abstract and subtle manner. I am interested in how a banal object becomes ambiguous and therefore real to an individual, ‘they can suggest shapes of the utmost horror to the mind obsessed by fear'.
