Collaborative Printmaking

About

East London Printmakers' current Artist in Resident, Sarah Lawton, will be teaching a Master Workshop that demonstrates how communal and collaborative printmaking with other artists can enlighten your own independent creative processes. Using block printing as a starting point students willà‚ develop drawn motifs in response to Indian embroidered cloth and from their own imagined narratives to carve into the blocks. Sarahà‚ organises collaborative exchanges with craftspeople all over the world. She has worked with Peruvian, Cypriot and Gujurati artisans to design make and print beautiful fabrics and garments. During this one day workshop you will have the opportunity to design and carve your own wood block to print onto fabric.à‚ You'll be working on Indian Khadi cloth, which is hand spun and woven in Gujurat.à‚ Participants are invited to bring along utilitarian, white garments they may wish to also print onto, including, T-shirts, Aprons, tote bags, etc… Additionally, as part of the session, artists will be asked to contribute to a communal print design using hand carved blocks made in Pethapur, India. Please note that this Master Workshop is only available to Members of ELP.
