About

This spring, our Sunley Gallery is transformed again with a brand new work, Atmosphere, by artist Edmund de Waal.

This new work, commissioned specially for our ground floor gallery space overlooking the North Sea, has been created in response to the changing landscape and clouds viewed from the gallery and the architecture of the space.

"...minimalist displays of coolly beautiful ceramic objects seductively straddle the old gap between art and craft. Modernism and ancient influences elegantly combine in art at once beautiful and thought-provoking." Jonathan Jones, The Guardian

De Waal, who grew up in Canterbury, is renowned for his work in ceramics, in particular his large-scale installations of porcelain vessels, and is the author of the bestselling The Hare with the Amber Eyes (which won the 2010 Costa biography award).

Vessels are suspended in the gallery, to capturing the changing light.

The experience is truly immersive. Come back time after time, to see the changing effects of light on the work over the seasons, lie back and relax in front of the work on our mats.

The piece is accompanied by Bauspiel, a plinth based work, and a new text installation spanning the entire corridor adjacent to the Sunley Gallery featuring quotes by Turner, Constable, Baudelaire and Ruskin.

The work coincides with the publication of a new monograph on the artist published by Phaidon Press.

"When thinking about the changing landscape of clouds, I remember Constable's beautiful letter about lying on his back and doing 'a great deal of skying'. There is no more extraordinary place to look at the sky than the Sunley Gallery at Turner Contemporary. Atmosphere is my attempt to make a response to this threshold between a building and the air outside. Suspended in the space are nine vitrine holding 200 small celadon and grey porcelain vessels. I hope they will provoke some skying of their own." Edmund de Waal
