About

Deutsche Börse shortlisted artist Richard Mosse discusses his practice. Richard Mosse (b.1980, Ireland) is nominated for his exhibition The Enclave at the Venice Biennale, Irish Pavilion (1 June — 24 November 2013). In The Enclave (2013) Mosse explores the intersection between contemporary art and photojournalism through images that render the Congolese landscape in surreal shades of bright pink. Mosse was drawn to eastern Congo because of the inherent problems of representing its cancerous cycle of war. Struck by the absence of a concrete trace of the conflict on the landscape, Mosse documented rebel enclaves and sites of human rights violations in a way which attempts to overturn traditional realism. Mosse's solo exhibitions in 2014 include Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, FOAM, Amsterdam, the University of New South Wales, Sydney, FOMU, Antwerp, the Vinyl Factory, London, DHC/Art, Montreal, and Open Eye Liverpool (2012). His work has been included in group shows at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence and B3 Frankfurt Biennial in 2013, and Contact Photography Festival, Toronto in 2012. Forthcoming group shows include The Sensory War 1914—2014, Manchester Art Gallery, and Contingency Plans, Shanghai Study Center.
