The Jam Factory Oxford is pleased to present Epistles from the Heart of Chaos, an exhibition of new work by London-based artist Josephine Lyons.

About

Working in paint, in this series Lyons creates work that explores some of the consequences of what we choose to memorialize and how this might affect our understanding of today. Lyons aims to explore the tension between religious and social frameworks and the chaos of individual existence. Her work references early religious paintings, especially the illumination around figures, to emphasize the varying emotional states of each figure within a general sense of chaos depicted through the use of vivid colour and raw mark-making. Following on from her sketches based around Perspective is light (2010) Lyons creates new multiple vanishing points in landscape painting. Referencing a use of light found in Christian and early Renaissance paintings, Lyons presents a more open use of light as a point of reference. Figures surrounded by light and intense areas of tonal contrast are dispersed throughout the painting, not just in the foreground where they would normally be seen, giving multiple imaginative echoes of natural space and different senses of potential. Lyons presents six paintings containing Epistles or letters embedded within the images. Both the images and the texts focus on the ill formed and mysterious memories of different religious and social beliefs acquired through existence in modern society and blends them into a chaos of colour.
