Explore Japan's deathly festivals and folklore through drawing

About

For our inaugural salon, Art Macabre visit Japan to take inspiration from the darker side of Japanese festivals, folklore and funerary traditions. We mark the event of ‘Hina Matsuri', Shinto's Japanese Doll Festival, exploring the uncanny nature of the doll with a model posing both nude and in traditional Japanese costume. Discover how dolls were originally used to cast out demonic spirits. Plus we'll explore Japanese folklore of 'Gashadokuru'- giant skeletons made of the bones of starved humans. Come and be inspired by tableaux featuring a nude model, props, costume and narrative to capture in your drawings, all to a haunting soundtrack of Japanese music curated for the event. Global Curiosities salons run at The Book Club every 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month. Exploring death rites, macabre mythology and necro narratives from around the world, drawing inspiration from a different location each event.
