About

Explore the space between night and day, between the dog and the wolf, in a display curated by the artist/film maker John Skoog in collaboration with Bjarke Hvass Kure. Drawing from the time when night approaches as surely as sleep, when street lamps are lit and every being becomes his own shadow, Skoog draws on his own practice to respond to Towner's collection. Skoog was particularly drawn to Eric Ravilious' working sketches and colour tests, some of which are on display for the first time alongside Ravilious' watercolour paintings Kirby Hall Fields (1935), Ironbridge Interior (1941) and Garden Path (1934). The collection display also inclues Edward Bawden's Back Garden at Great Bardfield (1933) and Gertrude Hermes' Through the Windscreen (1929). Near Dark is shown alongside his solo exhibition ‘Redoubt' and unfolds like a fragmented thriller, where you won't be able to trust your own eyes.
