Peter Kennard including new work with Cat Picton Phillipps
About
Pump House Gallery is pleased to present Uncertified Documents. The exhibition brings together over forty original photomontages by Peter Kennard, described as "Britain's master of photomontage". Made over a 30-year period from the 1970s, the works address social and political issues such as conflict, the environment, nuclear disarmament and civil liberty, subjects that remain highly pertinent. The exhibition will include the artist's photomontages and working roughs for his final pieces, alongside original copies of numerous media - newspapers, magazines, posters and books - in which they have appeared. Though no longer new in itself, such simple cut and paste techniques can still be disconcerting, demanding debate about the parameters of art and questioning the validity of media information.
Influenced by John Heartfield, Kennard's art communicates strong political messages. He conveys his ideas with unique wit and imagination, often disguising the high level of technical sophistication required to produce each image.
Since 2003 Kennard has been working collaboratively with Cat Picton Phillipps. They have recently made their first video, shot by Picton Phillipps - rough, DIY and reminiscent of the early montages. This extraordinary insight into the working process of Kennard and Picton Phillipps explores the actions of an artist; selecting, cutting, altering and reassembling to create new and critical images, making a visual comment on the world.
Peter Kennard has recently exhibited in 'Media Burn', Tate Modern, London, 2006, and has artwork in Tate and Victoria & Albert collections. Peter Kennard and Cat Picton Phillipps have recently exhibited in 'Forms of Resistance' at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, 2007; 'Green Zone/Red Zone' Gemak, the Free Academy, Den Hague, 2007; 'Antennae', Houston, Texas, 2007.
