Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013

About

Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art, 10 February - 8 March 2014 and Plymouth Arts Centre 12 February — 9 March 2014 The Jerwood Drawing Prize is the largest and longest running annual open exhibition for drawing in the UK. The aim is to explore and celebrate the diversity, excellence and range of current drawing practice. The exhibition this year reflects a broad range of approaches to drawing from pencil on paper to video work. The 76 artists were selected from over 3,000 entries by a panel that included Kate Brindley, Director of Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art MIMA, Michael Craig-Martin RA, artist, Charlotte Mullins, art critic, writer, broadcaster and editor of Art Quarterly. Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth Arts Centre have collaborated to tour this exhibition to Plymouth for the first time and the works are exhibited across both venues. Jerwood Drawing Prize has established a reputation for its commitment to championing excellence and promoting contemporary drawing practice within the UK. The open exhibition is a platform for drawing practitioners to showcase their work alongside other leading contemporary artists in this field, and provides those selected with the opportunity to contribute to the dialogue and understanding about drawing for current and future generations. jerwoodvisualarts.org/ plymouthart.ac.uk/gallery plymouthartscentre.org/ Jerwood Drawing Prize 2013 Exhibition Opening Weds 12 February / 5-8pm Join us to celebrate the opening of the Jerwood Drawing Prize, presented at The Gallery at Plymouth College of Art and Plymouth Art Centre. The evening will begin at Plymouth College of Art with drinks provided from 5-6.30pm and will continue at Plymouth Art Centre from 6.30-8pm. The Founder and Director of Jerwood Drawing Prize, Anita Taylor will give an introduction to the exhibition at both venues. Marie von Heyl Wednesday 26 February / 6pm Plymouth Arts Centre Marie von Heyl, was an award winner in this year's Jerwood Drawing Prize for her work titled Interior (Utopia). She will be talking about her practice with a focus on drawing as performance. Marie von Heyl works with film, drawing, collage and installation. An interest in interiors and mundane objects sits at the centre of her practice and her work is an attempt to catch them in the act of transcending their original context — when tables start moving and heirlooms assume a life of their own. Her work is a playful dancing around things, pointing at the unexpectedly beautiful, tracing the uncanny and tapping into the absurd. Karolina uses simple materials to explore particular thoughts and feelings or to describe a particular place or a person as sincerely as possible. She uses a combination of drawing and animation to make time-based expressive works and is interested in ideas of fragility, ephemerality and process and has recently been exploring the status of objects as recorders of memory.
