Sketchbooks from the SPAB

Each year the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (the SPAB) sends Scholars around Britain to study traditional building practice with experts in the field and to study country houses. The notebooks they produce during the year are an integral and valuable part of the Scholars experience. The SPAB Scholars notebooks demonstrated current drawing practice from the perspective of the skilled observer for recording purposes, and provide an examination of the tension between drawing as technical recording, diary, and the aesthetisising impulse. This exhibition allows a wider public to experience the work of the SPAB Scholars, and appreciate in the variety of responses within the notebooks the broad possibilities in drawing of recording similar histories.
