RIZHOMA.GALLERY ARRIVES IN LONDON WITH 'MAKING CULTURE'.
A SHOW FEATURING A SELECTION OF SIX YOUNG INTERNATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHERS SELECTED FROM ITS PREVIOUS PROJECTS IN PALERMO AND MILAN.
RizHoma.Gallery makes a new step in its exhibition pathway, presenting âMaking Culture' a group show featuring works by Giulia Bersani, Luke Boland, Merijn Koelink, Jack Latham, Sam Laughlin, and Alessandra Rinaudo curated by Martina Colajanni and hosted by A-side B-side Gallery at Hackney Downs Studios.
RizHoma.Gallery is a curatorial project by Martina Colajanni that was born in 2011 as a house gallery in Palermo, Italy. It featured shows and residencies with young artists under 35. In 2013 it moved to Milan, where the project will be based until the end of November 2013. London will be the first city to host a temporary space for RizHoma.Gallery with Making Culture, a show that resumes the crucial role of the native environment in the research of young contemporary photographers and its influence on their Aesthetics and Poetics.
At this point in its history, RizHoma's investigation into the importance of surroundings in an artists' research, and into performative approaches to art curating, determine the necessity to overrun into other realities, opening itself to any context where artistic debate can be generated.

Making Culture matches different points of view, putting together a group of seven young photographers from several European countries. The bodies of photographic research carried out by the participating artists are linked to a documentary trend that stems from places and personal events. For the most part this work represents the early stage of the artists' practices.

Giulia Bersani is a 21yr old photographer based in Milan. Her favourite and recurrent subjects are girls in whose tender portraits she can see herself reflected and reveal her personality. Her photographs stand in a cross-over zone between documentary and fashion photography and have been published in many specialized magazines as IGNANT.de, H.U.H, Contributor magazine, Photographas+ fotografas del mundo, Nasty magazine and Shoot For Your Life.
LUKE BOLAND

Luke Boland recently graduated from the Documentary Photography course at the University of South Wales, Newport. His interest in photography comes from the passion for cinema and the attempt to concentrate the impact of the moving image in the stillness of a photograph. His last projects focus on global industrial and economic expansion. Boland creates impressive images showing the industrial impact on landscape. His photographs have been exhibited at Diffusion Festival, Cardiff 2012.
MERIJN KOELINK

Merijn Koelink (b.1988) is a Dutch photographer based in the Netherlands, where attends the Undergraduate Course in Documentary Photography at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. He is a photographer who deals with city life through architecture, focusing on spaces that we find difficult to relate to and attempting to explore the reasons why they are perceived as disconnected and uninviting. Previous shows include: Expo LOOK, Ypsilon Park (The Hague, NL 2013) 100 Years of Newport Photography Exhibition, City Campus (Newport, UK 2012), SWIFT a Photography Exhibition, Jacobs Market (Cardiff, UK 2011). He won the 1st place beau photo prize at FotoFilmic'13 (Vancouver, CA 2013).
JACK LATHAM

Jack Latham (1989) is a Welsh photographer based in Brighton. A 2012 graduate of the BA Documentary Photography course at the University of Wales, Newport, his work focuses on more conceptual subject matter and is often presented in the form of large format photography and self-published books. His photographs were first published in the British Journal of Photography in their 2012 Student Profile", which highlighted up and coming talent across the UK. Jack has continued to work both in the UK and internationally. In addition to his own practice he co-curates a monthly lecture series in Brighton called Miniclick
