The Jerwood Collection: Revealed
About
This exhibition will offer an in depth look into the Jerwood Collection of 20th and 21st century British art, exploring the history and personal stories of the collection's development.The Jerwood Collection comprises primarily of paintings, works on paper and prints by British artists working between the First World War and the 1960s. Highlights include pieces by artists such as Sir Stanley Spencer, Lawrence Stephen Lowry, Walter Sickert and Augustus John. In addition are a number of contemporary works reflecting Jerwood's commitment to supporting excellence in contemporary art including winners Jerwood Painting Prize, including Craigie Aitchison and Prunella Clough, are represented. The collection continues to grow and evolve with regular new acquisitions.
The exhibition will provide the first opportunity to showcase almost the entirety of the collection in a single display since the gallery first opened. The display will include a number of key works, which have not yet been seen on public display at the gallery. This includes a number of works previously on long-term loan such as Craigie Aitchisons' Crucifixion (1994) and a series of maquettes by a variety of artists including, Sir Jacob Epstein (1880-1959), Dame Elisabeth Frink, (1930-1993), and Henry Moore (1898-1986).
