Michelle Bokser | Beyond Gravity

About

Alon Zakaim Fine Art and Primum Agmen are proud to present Beyond Gravity, an exhibition of sculptural works by British contemporary artist Michelle Bokser. On display at Alon Zakaim Fine Art's Dover Street gallery, Bokser's selection of écorché bronze figurines, inspired by the dynamic free movement of the professional dancer, are both delicate and powerful. The sinuous elongated figures work in contrast with the solidity of the rich, patinated bronze medium, creating a series of works with a startlingly contemporary edge. Bokser's sculptural work has a deep foundation in her drawing, as shown through the sweeping gestural forms of her figurative bronzes. Her work has an emotional appeal and an exhilarating freedom of movement, reflecting her desire to express what the artist refers to as 'the affirmation of the individual.' Bokser's figures stretch and reach upwards as though desirous to attain a higher physical strength. Their attempts to break 'beyond gravity' are a yearning for flight and spiritual freedom. Bokser sees the artistic act as a similar struggle, its aim being to challenge both the creator and audience, in order that they are inspired and empowered in the knowledge of their own individuality. The link between this individuality and the physical world are expressed in Nietzsche's maxim 'The body does not say "I" but performs "I"', a statement which Bokser feels epitomises her own practice. Having studied Fine Art at Chelsea and Kensington College, Michelle Bokser worked under the tutelage of Israeli artist Nahum Inbar between 1997-2000. Her work has been shown in numerous exhibitions in London and internationally, including the Islington Art Fair, Hortensia Art Gallery, and The Opera House, Tel Aviv. Her works are held in private collections around the world. Michelle Bokser lives and works in London. Beyond Gravity will be held at Alon Zakaim Fine Art, 5-7 Dover St, London W1S 4LD, from 9 December - 23 December 2013. Gallery opening hours are 9am - 6pm, Monday - Friday; or weekends by appointment only.
