Uliana Apatina: RED ROOM
About
Herrick Gallery is delighted to present RED ROOM, a new site-specific installation embracing memory, remembrance and the seductive power of red, by the artist Uliana Apatina. With a background in contemporary media art, architecture and literature, Uliana crosses borders of mediums and disciplines by creating huge immersive environments, which aim to challenge and provoke our perceptions of space, time and reality.
The artist attacks each site directly by developing ideas with an intuitive and immediate approach during the process of construction. Literally inhabiting a chosen site, Uliana builds the whole construction on her own to intellectually stimulate the mind, while physically disorienting the body with sounds and smells often coming to play in the overall sensory experience.
Born in Siberia, Uliana Apatina moved to London on receiving a Scholarship at the Architectural Association School of Architecture where during her tenure she was also granted the Boas Award for a Residency at the British School in Rome.
Apatina's recent site-specific artworks across London include 'Staircase' at Chisenhale Art Place and 'That Side Where Real Is', nine installations in the Crypt@St Marks Church, Oval.
Uliana Apatina lives and works in London.
