About

LINE DRIFT LOCI 22nd November — 7th December 2013 Opening reception: Thursday 21st November 6.00 - 9.00pm CLEM CROSBY BRENDAN COLVERT ALEX DIPPLE TIM KNOWLES HOLGER LIPPMANN RUZICA ZAJEC TANJA ZIMMERMANN Within his theory of Structuralism Jean Piaget explores how we pass from an entirely sensori-motor phase where thought does not involve representation, to the semiotic phase with its ability to evoke what is not actually perceived. Evolving from a sensori-motor schemata and propelled into new planes of thought gives rise to conceptual structures of thought and reflective abstraction. Classification inevitably creeps in which leads to ordering and logic, and though highly regarded within Western cultures such ordering and classifying may not allow for fluidity or reversibility of thought, which for the artist can lead to new forms of expression. Line Drift Loci presents work by seven artists that form a conversation between London, Orkney, Scotland and Mecklenburg, Germany. By allowing controlled freedoms within their use of line, these artists explore the mechanism that creates the lines, from the body to the machine. With the expanding abilities and accuracy of contemporary technologies the potential for ‘line drift' becomes increasingly rare and the intuitive need for random or accidental variation increasingly acute. The nature that underlies physical reality is constantly in the process of construction rather than a heap of finished structures, and somewhere deep within the neurons controlling subconscious drawing, and the megabytes determining mechanical failings, contemporary artistic practice seems at times contingent to all possible manifestations of the artists loci.
