About

Gallery koal is pleased to present the third solo exhibition by Bulgarian artist Stefania Batoeva in its space in Berlin. We cordially invite you to the opening reception held on Friday, November 8, 2013, from 7 to 9 pm. Stefania Batoeva's recent work unites several processes: First: the perception of a volatile, omnipresent everyday life, second: the transfer of this everyday life to abstract levels of expression and, third: the investigation of the conflicts with timelessness and the established — conflicts that are caused by that transfer. The overlap of the three processes is expressed through various different forms. For instance, a work of plaster, perhaps a reference to the exhibition room's stucco decoration or maybe simply construction material that has abruptly congealed while in movement. Or vivid and colourful surfaces, on which firm brush strokes allude to the shapes of passers-by, household items or the blurry scenes of a surreal dream. Straight on the wall one finds frameless and vulnerable: raw canvases with dark oil paint, stark contrasts that appear as if they were painted just seconds before one looks at them. The gesture of the incomplete, if not the unintentional, stands out as leitmotif. The artist's pieces convey their atmospheric tone as if they were snapshots, not staged, as if Batoeva just caught them. As such, once the observer looks back at the pieces, they will immediately start overflowing with vitality again. In contrast with the sculptures previously shown by Batoeva at Gallery koal, in this show the artist provides a new kind of materiality; a look and feel that represents the tangibleness of skin or sand, of wood or a freshly plastered wall. Batoeva, born in 1981 in Sofia, currently studies at the Royal College of Art in London. This year, among other things, her works have been featured in the BiennaleOnline 2013, at Turner Contemporary in Kent as well as at the Kunstverein Frankfurt
